Glass Techniques (23/24)

Course Overview

This glass course will explore a wide range of traditional and contemporary glass techniques, including stained glass and kiln formed glass processes. Beginners will learn the skills to design and make 2D and 3D projects using foil, mosaic, fusing and decorative surface processes. More experienced students can continue to develop personal projects and be supported to extend and use new glass techniques.

What topics are covered?

Session/Week 1-2: There will be a short introduction and overview of the techniques and processes that will be covered in the course. The tutor will demonstrate the specialist tools, how to use them safely and introduce best studio practice. Students will then make a simple mosaic panel, and on completion of this project will be able to cut and handle glass confidently, use specialist tools in a safe environment and make a mosaic panel to an individual design. Session/Week 2-4: These sessions are planned to give you more accurate cutting skills, by making a copper foiled 2D project. On completion you will be able to cut glass accurately to a pattern that has been developed from a personal design idea and understand copper foil techniques and how to use a soldering iron. Session/Week 5-10: Now that you have competent core skills, you will be able to choose the techniques and processes you want to explore. You will be able to make a traditional stained glass panel, in the leaded technique, or a more complex 2D copperfoiled panel, practise kiln formed glass techniques or find out about surface decoration, such as painting, enamelling and sandblasting to include in your projects. All relevant Health & Safety issues are discussed and explained throughout the course.

Suitable for beginners and experienced practitioners
The focus is always on learning through making, at every stage your tutor will provide an introduction, demonstration and on-going practical guidance. The teaching is a combination of presentation to the group and predominately one to one working alongside individual students. It is fully appreciated that each student will establish their own style and pace of learning. Exploring new skills, developing designs, making samples and prototypes is very much part of the process.
All tools, specialist equipment, sandblasting and kiln costs will be provided throughout the course. Materials for the first mosaic project will also be provided. Glass, foil and solder will be given for the foiled project at a minimum cost. Glass, lead, solder and specialist fusing glass for more advanced projects can be bought from the college shop or advice given as to the best local suppliers to purchase a wider range of materials. A reasonable amount to allow for a 40x40cms panel or a 30x30cms fused bowl would be 8-12.
