Are you looking for a career in grooming, dog day care, farm, petshop? Then this is the course for you. Our City & Guilds Extended Certificate in Animal Care is a nationally recognised qualification covering a wide range of topics from feeding and handling to animal welfare, behaviour and biology.

It is an interesting, varied course that gives you the essential knowledge and practical skills needed to either enter the industry or progress in your studies to Level 3. Entry Requirements
4 GCSE’s at Grade 3 or above to include both maths and English. (Grade 3 in science is also desirable) alternatively, Level 1 in Animal Care with a good placement report and Functional Skills maths and English at Level 1. (and a college digital badge in science)
What topics are covered?
How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is taught using a combination of hands-on practical in our dedicated animal centre and theory sessions that provide the depth of knowledge needed to be successful on your chosen career path. Maths and English are also built into your programme to enable you to achieve the Grade 4/FS2 desired by industry and needed for progression to higher courses.

You also develop employability skills and knowledge of the animal care industry through trips and a weekly work placement of your choosing. You are formally assessed by completing one assignment per unit. Each assignment is graded Pass/Merit/Distinction and these may be of a practical and/or written nature.

What can I do next?
Achieving this Level 2 (with a Merit grade in the biology unit plus achievement of Grade 4 / FS Level 2 in English and maths) will enable you to progress onto the Level 3 Animal Management course. In addition, successful completion of this course enables you to progress into paid employment or onto an Apprenticeship scheme.
Are there any additional costs?
Students need to purchase steel toe capped boots and navy overalls for their practical lessons and need to pay a £10 refundable deposit for a locker. Some course related trips may incur a cost, where this is the case details will be sent home prior to the event.

What is the aim of the course?
The aim of this City & Guilds Level 2 Extended Certificate is to provide the opportunity to gain direct experience of working in the animal care sector and ensure you have a strong foundation of knowledge and practical skills. Those who successfully complete this course provide the animal care industry with nationally recognised competent, qualified staff. Those who continue to Level 3 then become competent and qualified to supervisor/manager level.
