Course Overview

T Levels are new courses which will follow GCSEs and will be equivalent to three A Levels. These two-year courses have been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so that the content meets the needs of industry and prepares learners for work. T Levels combine classroom theory, practical learning and a minimum 315 hours of industry placement with an employer to make sure students have real experience of the workplace.

This qualification is for you if you are a 16-19-year-old learner, who wishes to work within the Digital sector with a focus on software design and development. The qualification will help you gain an understanding of the sector, and you will cover topics such as: Programming, Emerging Issues and the Impact of Digital, Business Context, Data and Security.

Entry Requirements
To study on this course you will need to have 5 GCSEs at Grade 5 or above including Maths and English Language. Learners who successfully complete the Digital Level 2 T-Level Transition at a Distinction will be considered for this course.
What topics are covered?
Core content of this route will include: development of the understanding of business content, ethical and moral issues, handling of data and analysis, digital environments, diversity and inclusion, learning, legislation, planning, security, testing and tools. This core content is assessed through an examination and a practical employer-set project. The employer-set project ensures students have the opportunity to combine core knowledge and skills to develop a substantial piece of work in response to an employer set brief. This employer set project is designed to be used in relation to Digital Production Design and Development.
How will I be taught and assessed?

All students will achieve two components of the Technical Qualification 'Core' and 'Occupational Specialism'. The 'Core' element will include key concepts and theories and will be graded A* - E. Assessments will include external exams and an Employer Set Project. The 'Occupational Specialism' will include a synoptic practical exam based upon occupational maps. In addition to this all students will complete a minimum of 315 hours industry placement.

What can I do next?

This Technical Qualification supports progression to:

  • UCAS points in line with 3 A levels (168 points).
  • Entry-level job opportunities in software design and development.
  • Level 3 Software Technician Apprenticeship to develop and gain certification of their occupational competence,
  • Higher level Apprenticeships such as the Level 4 Software Developer, depending on their skills or experience.
  • Higher National Certificate (HNC) or Higher National Diploma (HND) programmes
  • Digital degree programmes such as:
    • Computer Games Programming BCs,
    • Software Engineering BSc,
    • Virtual Reality Design BA,
    • Computing BSc,
    • Digital Media Design and Development BSc,
    • Computer Science BSc.
Are there any additional costs?
You will be required to purchase the relevant revision workbooks and text books for the course. IT equipment required for the course is provided by the College. However, it would be a significant advantage if you have a PC at home for independent study.

What is the aim of the course?
This T Level programme has been developed in collaboration with employers and businesses so the content will meet the needs of industry and prepare students for work. They provide the knowledge and experience needed to open the door to highly skilled employment, an Apprenticeship or higher level study, including university.
