Course Overview

Have you always wanted to work with animals? On this SEG Level 1 course you will work with a wide variety of animals in our dedicated Animal Centre (from rabbits, guinea-pigs and birds to snakes, lizards and insects).

This introductory level course teaches you how to effectively assist in a team to provide all basic care that animals need within the industry, such as feeding, watering and maintaining health. Theory sessions help you develop your knowledge and understanding of animal welfare and Health & Safety related to these tasks.

A genuine interest in working with animal is essential plus GCSE maths and English Grade 2 or above/Functional Skills Entry Level 3.
What topics are covered?
How will I be taught and assessed?

This course is taught by experienced, qualified staff through a hands-on practical approach and activity-based theory sessions that deepen your knowledge and understanding. Maths and English are built into your programme to help your progression and you also develop employability skills and knowledge of the animal care industry through trips and a weekly work placement of your choosing.

For those wishing to progress to level 2, a college digital badge in biology also forms part of the course. All units are assessed both practically in the College Animal Centre and through the written work you produce throughout the year.

What can I do next?
Achieving this Level 1 Certificate in Animal Care (with a good report from your placement) plus achievement Entry Level 3 in maths and English, will enable you to progress on to the Level 2 Extended Certificate in Animal Care. You may also progress into paid employment in an assistant animal care role.
Are there any additional costs?
Students need to purchase steel toe capped boots and navy overalls for their practical lessons and need to pay a £10 refundable deposit for a locker. Some course related trips may incur a cost, where this is the case details will be sent home prior to the event.

What is the aim of the course?
The aim of this course is to give you the confidence and foundation knowledge, understanding and work-related skills (including maths and English) to enable you to progress onto Level 2 animal care related courses or to enable you to enter employment as an animal care assistant.
