Frequently Asked Questions

Entry Requirements
There are no academic entry requirements needed in order to enrol on this programme. All we ask is that you show enthusiasm, dedication and commitment to what can be a physically demanding but immensely rewarding course and career choice. Depending on your prior grades, experience, and aptitude, you may be able to join the course at level 2.
What topics are covered?
How will I be taught and assessed?
Each level of the course runs for 36 weeks, set over three terms (so 2 years in total, for both levels 1 and 2). Your time will be split approximately 50% practical work and 50% theory work. You will also have embedded Functional skills/GCSE, Maths and English classes (if you do not already hold GCSE grade C/4).
What can I do next?
Academically and within the college itself, you will progress from level 1 to 2, over 2 years. Outside the college and when you have achieved your qualification, in the construction industry alone, you will soon discover that there is literally no end to the possibilities and opportunities that will open up to you. You might want to start your own business or specialise in bespoke areas of building. You could take your skills and adapt them to site management, project management, surveying and planning, landscaping, building technician, quantity surveyor and quality control, to name but a few. There is no end to the opportunities that could come your way and it could all start by enrolling on our Bricklaying course, picking up a trowel and discovering the exciting journeys that your path could lead you on. Here at Bath College, we have firmly established links with contractors and employers, so when the time comes for progression, we can sit down with you, identify your strengths and what direction you feel is best for you, then do all we can to set you on your chosen career path and to ensure that your potential is fully realised.
Are there any additional costs?
Steel toe capped boots must be purchased before you start your course, students will not be allowed in the workshops without them.
What else do I need to know?
What is the aim of the course?
The aim of this course is to build up a skill set and theoretical knowledge in Bricklaying, as well as the wider construction industry as a whole. There are almost as many aspects of Bricklaying as there are reasons for a student to enrol upon this course. When you enrol on a Bricklaying course with Bath College, you will not only learn how to build standard constructions with Bricks and blocks, you will learn how to master a specific set of tools that can be turned to many other aspects of building, including decorative brickwork, stonework, hard landscaping and paving. As well as achieving an internationally recognised qualification in a time honoured trade, you will also have the opportunity to gain your CSCS card. A CSCS card provides proof to potential employers, that you have the appropriate training and qualifications for the job.
