This qualification is designed for those who are currently working with children, young people or adults with learning disabilities and want to enhance their skills and knowledge to actively support them as part of their job. This includes but is not limited to Teaching Assistants, social workers, health care assistants, librarians, housing officers, probation staff, community volunteers and charity workers.

In this course, you will learn about learning disabilities from a social, medical, and historical context, and the possible impact of having a family member with a learning disability. You will explore the importance of effective communication through practical exercises, issues around confidentiality, and how multiple conditions and/or disabilities may affect an individual’s life and wellbeing. There is also a unit on autism awareness.

This qualification is intended for professional development. Learners will need to already be working or volunteering in an education, or health and social care setting to fulfil practical competence criteria with the awarding body.

Entry Requirements

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. You will be expected to source a work experience placement of at least one day per week in an education, or health and social care setting. You will also need GCSE or equivalent in English Language at Grade C/4.

All applicants will be invited to an interview with the course tutor which may include an initial assessment to ensure the qualification is appropriate for them. It will also be the opportunity to ask any specific questions you might have about the programme.

 

What topics are covered?

This course has 4 units and will cover the following areas:

  • The context of supporting individuals with learning disabilities
  • Communication in health and social care settings
  • Supporting individuals with multiple conditions and/or disabilities
  • Awareness of autistic spectrum conditions

 

How will I be taught and assessed?

You will be taught once a week by a specialist tutor via face-to-face lessons in the classroom. Your learning will be enhanced through work research, group activities, discussions, and practical exercises, and will include planned trips and guest speakers.

Learners will be assessed via written project portfolios and practical sessions observed whilst in their work experience placement.

What else do I need to know?

This qualification does not qualify you to work but will support you in your current job role or future job roles when supporting children, young people or adults with learning disabilities.

What is the aim of the course?

You will gain an NCFE Cache Level 2 Award in Supporting Individuals with Learning Disabilities.
