Course Overview

Veterinary nursing is a career to be proud of. Working as an integral part of the veterinary team; vet nurses provide expert nursing care to sick and injured animals as well as playing a significant role in educating owners on maintaining the health of their pets. The day in the life of a veterinary nurse will be busy, varied, challenging but incredibly rewarding. Veterinary nurses are registered professionals and work within the standards and scope of practice defined by the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS). Here at Bath College, we are able to offer a level 3 apprenticeship programme in Veterinary Nursing. Completion of this qualification will lead to students becoming registered veterinary nurses and allow professional registration with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons. Commitment to animal welfare and raised standards of veterinary nursing care is fundamental to the course offered at Bath college. With the correct entry qualifications and a passion for animal health and welfare we can offer you the opportunity to train as a veterinary nurse and allow you to succeed in an exciting and highly rewarding profession. The veterinary nursing course is run by members of the veterinary industry. Lectures are taught by veterinary nurses and veterinary surgeons with a wealth of experience and an insight into the profession. We are passionate about teaching the future generation of veterinary nurses and are committed to your success. The level 3 diploma of veterinary nursing (companion animal) will cover the nursing of the Cat, Dog, Rabbit, and Guinea Pig.

What topics are covered?

Subjects will be taught in class as both lecture and practical sessions. Bath College boasts a large variety of resources including a wide selection of live animals, laboratory equipment, X-ray and anaesthetic as well as innovative simulator animals on which to practice life saving techniques. Many topics are covered to allow you to develop the skills and knowledge required to gain this qualification. You will undertake the following units: VN01 Professional Veterinary Nursing Responsibilities VN02 Diagnostic Principles VN03 Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 1 VN04 Pharmacology and Dispensary Management VN05 Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills 1 VN06 Anaesthesia and Theatre Nursing Skills VN07 Life Stage Nursing Care and Support VN08 Principles of Veterinary Nursing Care 2 VN09 Surgical Nursing and Patient Care VN10 Practical Veterinary Nursing Skills 2 Embedded within this qualification is the content required for a Student Veterinary Nurse to become a Suitably Qualified Person (SQP) for Companion Animals.

You must be at least 16 years of age and have a minimum of 5 GCSEs at grades A*-C (or 9-4), including English Language, Mathematics and a Science subject to register as a Student Veterinary Nurse with the Royal College of Veterinary Surgeons (RCVS) and start this programme. If you do not meet the GCSE requirement, there are alternative qualifications that may be acceptable, such as Level 2 Functional Skills in English and Maths being acceptable equivalents to GSCEs in English Language and Mathematics.
There are no additional costs however students may wish to buy the recommended textbooks. Educational trips may also be organised.
These courses will enable you to develop the essential skills and knowledge for work within the veterinary sector. On successfully completing each course, you will achieve a nationally recognised qualification at the appropriate level.
Assessment takes place in the form of online examinations, practical examinations and assignments. Over the course of your training, you will also complete an E-portfolio in which you log your practical competencies. On completion of all other aspects of the course you will sit objective structured clinical examinations (OSCEs) in which your practical capabilities will be assessed.
On completion of the course, you will be a registered veterinary nurse and enrolled with the royal college of veterinary surgeons. There are many pathways a RVN can take including but not limited to first opinion practice, referral work, progression to head nurse status, clinical coaching, pharmaceutical work, and teaching.
