Course Overview
Led by a practising artist, this Oil Painting course will go into depth on the medium of oil paint. We will start with broader topics, including an introduction into the history of oil painting, how to mix colours effectively, including those for skin tones, and how to plan compositions for your paintings. These will directly inform small practice paintings. We will then move onto a larger work of your choice, painted over multiple weeks, in which you can bring all the knowledge learnt throughout the course. You will work from a variety of stimuli, including direct observation, photographs, and famous works of art.
Your tutor will provide close mentoring and encouragement throughout the whole ten weeks, and you will leave with the knowledge and confidence to continue painting with oils independently.
What topics are covered?
How to safely use solvents for oil paint; mixing mediums with your oils to achieve different effects; brush work; colour theory and mixing; composition; tone.

Some previous experience with painting is required for this course, though not necessarily with oils. This course is an ideal follow up for those who enjoyed oils on the standard Painting course.
There are no assessments on this course. You will learn through practical demonstrations and one-to-one tuition.
All materials are provided. Please wear coveralls/an apron, or clothes you don't mind getting messy.
