Course Overview

This Level 1 qualification is ideal for anyone who is new to welding and wants to acquire practical skills and underpinning knowledge of Tungsten Inert Gas welding (TIG). It is also suitable for those who wish to add TIG welding process to their existing skills.

In this 15-week programme, you will learn different types of welding techniques that are typically used in industry. You will develop your practice in our fully equipped and professional welding workshop and evaluate your work through various tests and checks to ensure it is completed to required standards. This introductory course is designed to give students the skills and confidence to progress onto higher levels. Classes are taught one evening a week at our Somer Valley Campus, near Radstock.

This course has 1 unit and will cover the following areas:

  • Understanding the process and health & safety requirements of TIG welding process
  • Producing different welded joint types in simple welding positions
  • Checking joints and identifying defects

Upon successful completion of this course, you can move into employment and progress to study our Part-Time Welding Award L2 course.

 

You will need to wear safety footwear and clothing, ideally flame retardant. Please note learners who do not wear the adequate equipment will be refused access to the workshop.

 

You will be working in the College welding workshop with tuition from a specialist tutor. You will be assigned individual welding bays complete with welding sets and safety equipment. Your learning will be enhanced through repetitive tasks and group work where appropriate.


You will be assessed through a number of practical assignments and an oral knowledge test.

 

This course has a maximum of 10 learners on each session. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.


Please note this course does not cover car bodywork repairs or taster sessions on multi-welding processes. If you wish to acquire skills in more than one discipline, you may consider applying for our Part-Time Welding Certificate course which allows to study two of the most commonly used welding processes in industry.


Our Somer Valley Campus offers free parking and cafe open until 8pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.

 

You will gain a City & Guilds Level 1 Award in Introductory Tungsten Inert Gas (TIG) Welding.

 

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. Each applicant will be contacted for an interview.


You do not need any prior qualification or knowledge to enrol in this course.
