Part Time Qualifications - Welding Award L2 (TIG or MIG) (23/24)

Course Overview

This Level 2 qualification is designed for those wishing to build on introductory welding skills acquired at Level 1. It is ideal for individuals who are already working in welding and fabrication industries and are looking to develop their skills further and increase their responsibilities and knowledge.

In this 15-week programme, you will learn different types of welding techniques that are typically used in industry. You will develop your practice in our fully equipped and professional welding workshop and evaluate your work through various tests and checks to ensure it is completed to required standards.

Classes are taught one evening a week at our Somer Valley Campus, near Radstock. Learners will also need to be able to practice their skills outside of college time (i.e. in their workplace or at home).


What topics are covered?

The course has 1 unit and will cover the following areas:

  • Understanding the process and health & safety requirements of your chosen welding process
  • Producing different welding joint types in standard welding positions
  • Checking joints and identifying defects

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. Each applicant will be contacted for an interview.

While you do not need any prior qualification to enrol in this course, you will be expected to demonstrate the skills and knowledge required to study at this level.

 

You will gain a City & Guilds Level 2 Award in Welding Skills.

 

Upon successful completion of this course, you can apply for jobs that require more specialist skills and progress to study our Part-Time Level 3 Award in Advanced Welding Skills.

 

You will need to wear safety footwear and clothing, ideally flame retardant. Please note learners who do not wear the adequate equipment will be refused access to the workshop.

 

You will be working in the College welding workshop with tuition from a specialist tutor. You will be assigned individual welding bays complete with welding sets and safety equipment. Your learning will be enhanced through repetitive tasks and group work where appropriate.


You will be assessed through a number of practical assignments and an oral knowledge test.

 

This course has a maximum of 10 learners on each session. To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.


Please note this course does not cover car bodywork repairs or taster sessions on multi-welding processes. If you wish to acquire skills in more than one discipline, you may consider applying for our Part-Time Welding Certificate course which will allow you to study two of the most commonly used welding processes in industry.

Our Somer Valley Campus offers free parking and cafe open until 8pm Tuesdays and Thursdays.
