Course Overview
This course is designed to equip students with construction and the built environment skills, knowledge, and the understanding necessary to achieve high performance in the global construction and the built environment sector.
The qualifications in Civil Engineering are aimed at students wanting to continue their education through applied learning. In addition to the knowledge, understanding and skills that underpin the study of the construction and the built environment sector, Pearson BTEC Higher Nationals in Civil Engineering give students experience of the breadth and depth of the sector that will prepare them for further study or training.
Graduates successfully completing the Pearson BTEC Level 4 Higher National Certificate in Civil Engineering will demonstrate a sound knowledge of the basic concepts of Construction. They will be able to communicate accurately and appropriately, and they will have the qualities needed for employment that requires some degree of personal responsibility. They will have developed a range of transferable skills to ensure effective team working, independent initiatives, organisational competence, and problem-solving strategies.
Please note: The full cost for this 2-year programme is 7,000 and payment of the fees will be split between in Year 1 and Year 2.
What topics are covered?
At Level 4 students develop a broad knowledge and awareness of key aspects of the construction and the built environment sector through four core units, which includes one unit assessed through a Pearson-set assignment. The core units for the Civil Engineering pathway are:
- (Core Mandatory) 1- Construction Design Project (Pearson Set)
- (Core Mandatory) 3 - Science & Materials
- (Core Mandatory) 4 - The Construction Environment
- (Core Mandatory) 8 - Mathematics for Construction
- (Specialist Mandatory) 17 - Civil Engineering Technology
- (Specialist Mandatory) 19 - Principles of Structural Design
The 'optional pathway' for Civil Engineering at Level 4, students will undertake a further two optional units (related to their Level 4 Pathway) from:
- (Optional Unit) 12 - Tender and Procurement
- (Optional Unit) 13 - Building Information Modelling

A related Level 3 diploma or A-levels. Mature students wishing to study Higher National courses will be assessed with an entry exam at interview. We will also review students with other qualifications and/or experience.
All applicants will be invited to an interview with the course tutor which
may include an initial assessment to ensure the qualification is appropriate for
them. It will also be the opportunity to ask any specific questions you might
have about the programme.
You will be taught over one day a week via a variety of lectures, group work and class discussions and exercises. The first semester's units are common core units to other pathways and the second-year units are specifically aimed at your chosen pathway Civil Engineering.
Assessment comes in the form of written reports and reviews based on
briefs that are both vocationally and contextually relevant to the contemporary
construction industry.
On successful completion of your HNC Level 4, you can progress to the HND Level 5 to study more advanced subjects and further your membership status with your chosen Institute.
You can also gain access to a National Network of vocationally recognised
Universities to study at BSc level and ultimately gain full corporate membership
of your chosen professional institute.

This HNC course costs 7,000. It is completed over two years at 3,500 per year.
