Join our informative and friendly online session for AAT Accounting Level 1 to Level 4 courses starting in September 2024! This session offers a valuable opportunity to learn about the programmes, meet with College staff, and ask any questions you might have. This AAT Level 1 qualification introduces the role of the bookkeeper, including the importance of timely and accurate information as well as ethical principles. The course provides the underpinning knowledge to identify and carry out simple bookkeeping activities, such as income and expenses, profit and loss, and assets and liabilities. It also offers an introduction into the benefits and risks associated with bookkeeping software, and software security. 

There is no need for any prior accounting or bookkeeping knowledge to enrol in this course. It is designed to give students the introductory knowledge and confidence to take on higher level AAT qualifications and to progress in their lives and careers.

AAT qualifications are internationally recognised. Members are represented at every level of the finance and accounting world, including students studying for a career in finance, people already working in accountancy and self-employed business owners.


What topics are covered?

This course has one mandatory unit and will cover the following areas:

  • The role of the bookkeeper 
  • The basic terminology in accounting and bookkeeping 
  • Understanding the dual effect of financial transactions 
  • Processing customer and supplier transactions, receipts and payments
  • Preparing business documents such as invoices and credit notes
  • The benefits and risks of using accounting software to complete bookkeeping tasks

You will be taught by a specialist tutor via face-to-face lessons in the classroom. There is one end-of-course assessment which is computer-based and will take place on campus. 

Students who are not local or unable to travel to the campus to participate in the exams will need to arrange this with a different venue and pay an extra fee.

Upon successful completion of the course, you can progress to study the Level 2 Certificate in Accounting or move into employment in a junior or supporting administrative role. Jobs you can apply for include Trainee Bookkeeper, Accounts Administrator, Procurement and Finance Assistant or Assistant Cashier.

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. You do not need any prior accounting or bookkeeping knowledge to enrol in this course. However, for the best chance of success, we recommend that you begin your studies with a good standard of English and Maths.

All applicants will be invited to an interview with the course tutor which may include an initial assessment to ensure the qualification is appropriate for them. It will also be the opportunity to ask any specific questions you might have about the programme.

You will need to register for AAT student membership to study this qualification.

To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.
