Course Overview

This AAT Level 2 qualification will deliver a solid foundation in finance administration and core accounting skills, including double-entry bookkeeping, basic costing and an understanding of purchase, sales and general ledgers. This course is ideal for anyone wishing to study accountancy and finance alongside a range of complementary business and personal skills.

Students will learn about accountancy and finance-related business, gain an understanding of accounting software, and develop professional skills and behaviours needed to contribute effectively to the workplace. They will also be introduced to the four key themes embedded in the suite of AAT qualifications: ethics, technology, communications and sustainability.

AAT qualifications are internally recognised. Members are represented at every level of the finance and accounting world, including students studying for a career in finance, people already working in accountancy and self-employed business owners.


What topics are covered?

This course has four mandatory units and will cover the following areas:

  • Introduction to Bookkeeping 
  • Principles of bookkeeping controls including control accounts, journals and bank reconciliations 
  • Principles of costing including costing techniques and the concept of budgeting
  • Using accounting software
  • The importance of effective communication and ethics in business 
  • Developing lifelong learning skills 
  • Introduction to Business and Company Law

This course is aimed at adults aged 18 and 19+. You can start this course with any qualification depending on your existing skills and experience. However, for the best chance of success, we recommend that you begin your studies with a good standard of English and Maths. Accountants work at the very heart of a business and are expected to be able to communicate information clearly and appropriately to a given audience.

All applicants will be invited to an interview with the course tutor which may include an initial assessment to ensure the qualification is appropriate for them. It will also be the opportunity to ask any specific questions you might have about the programme.

You will be taught by a specialist tutor via face-to-face lessons in the classroom. Assessments are computer-based and will take place on campus. Three units are assessed by an end-of-unit assessment. The fourth assessment includes a synoptic assessment that draws on and assesses knowledge and understanding from across a number of units. 

Students who are not local or unable to travel to the campus to participate in the exams will need to arrange this with a different venue and pay an extra fee.

 

You will need to register for AAT student membership to study this qualification.

To avoid disappointment, please make sure you apply for your chosen course early. Decisions regarding running or cancelling a course are made one week prior to the start of the course.

 

You will gain an AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting. 

 

Upon successful completion of the course, you can progress to study the Level 3 Diploma in Accounting or move into employment. Jobs you can apply for include Accounts Administrator, Payroll Administrator, Purchase/Sales Ledger Clerk, Accounts Assistant or Payroll Officer.
